The nucleophilicity of the nitrogen atom survives in many different functional groups, although its basicity may be lost. Reactions of non-basic, but nucleophilic urea nitrogens provide, for example, an easy entry to sleeping-pills (barbiturates) as well as to stimulants (caffeine). The nitrogen atoms of imidazoles and indole anions are also nucleophilic and the NH protons can be easily substituted.

Students determine the average weight of vitamin E pills using several different methods (one at a time, in sets of ten pills, and in sets of 100 pills). The data collected by the class are pooled together, plotted as histograms, and compared with results predicted by a normal distribution. The histograms and standard deviations for the pooled data also show the effect of sample size on the standard error of the mean. 

Concentrations of LCMs are 14—143 kg/m (5—50 Ib/bbl). The higher concentrations are used in the form of a 10—20 m (60—120 bbl) pill that is placed across the loss zone until a seal is estabhshed that allows circulation to be regained. 

Synthetic fiber producers have attempted to minimise the tendency for pilling by several methods, one of which is to reduce polymer molecular weight. The resulting lower strength fiber would break away from the fabric surface more readily. Another method for reducing pilling is to notch or etch the fiber surface either before or after incorporation in fabric form.
