Physiological properties naturally occurring

A review of isoxazole compounds (covering the period 1963—1977) discusses their synthesis, reactivity, and physiological and physicochemical properties naturally occurring and biologically active isoxazoles are included.27 Some Saudi Arabian plants have been screened for alkaloids.28 Aristolochic acids I (28 R = H) and D (28 R = OH), which are cytotoxic to mammalian systems, are also cytotoxic to non-tumorous plant cells.29... 

There are a lot of stories of the resveratrol type small, naturally occurring molecules for which there is evidence of important physiological properties. Resveratrol, or one of its chemical relatives, may prove to be a valuable compound for human health. It may also prove to be a curiosity. Time will tell stay tuned. In the meantime, the resveratrol story is a boon for the makers and marketers of red wine. I do not know if we really need an excuse to drink a glass of red wine but it is convenient to have one. 

Although cyclic terpene alcohols occur widely in nature, few have the physiological properties that make them important fragrance or flavor materials. Exceptions are a-terpineol and (—)-menthol, the latter because of its cooling/refreshing effect. Of the bicyclic monoterpene alcohols, bomeol deserves mention. 

The properties and reactions of amino-alcohols, obtained largely by hydrolysis of naturally occurring alkaloids, were investigated primarily for the purposes of structural analysis and the preparation of physiologically active derivatives. Many authors have described acylation of pyrrolizidine alcohols with benzoyl chloride and acetic anhydride (see, e.g., refs. 83 and 101). Trachelanthamidine benzoate and p-aminobenzoate were prepared especially for testing of their physiological activity.102 The p-aminobenzoate was obtained by treatment of trachelanthamidine with p-nitrobenzoyl chloride and subsequent reduction of the nitro group with iron in 20% acetic acid. The compound exhibited an anesthetic activity close to that of cocaine. 

However, corticosteroids and their metabolites (1) were early recognized as possessing powerful antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Even prior to 1950, reports of the antiarthritic properties of cortisone (1) by Hench and co-workers (2) indicated the potential for these compounds to reduce the suffering of patients with inflammatory diseases. This awareness, combined with the first synthesis of naturally occurring glucocorticoids (11-desoxycorticosterone), led not only to the massive increase in research in the area of steroid synthesis and physiology, but to a Nobel prize in 1950 for early steroid pioneers Hench, Reichstein, and Kendall. 

Naturally occurring peptides are substrates of enzymes and ligands of receptors. Many peptides serve as neurotransmitters and hormones. Because they control a variety of physiological processes, they are also implicated in different diseases. For several reasons peptides are usually unsuitable as drugs, so many efforts in medicinal chemistry aim at the development of peptidomimetics with improved properties.
