Physical Treatment Pigging Pros and Cons

For those involved in industry, scrubbing the inside of a pipeline by using pigging is a familiar practice. In this practice, a relatively hard (but not too hard) object is sent through a pipe. There are at least two requirements for this process to be applicable to a pipe  

The pipe must be piggable in other words, the geometry and shape of the pipe must allow the travel of the pig (pipeline inspection gauge) along with it. 

There must exist launcher and reeeiver facilities available at both ends of the pipe. 

Inspection pigs (also referred to as in-line inspection pigs, smart pigs, and intelligent pigs ) are used to collect data (including, but not limited to, corrosion) from within the pipe using two methods  

Magnetic flux leakage (MFL), where the inspection is done by sending magnetic flux into the walls of the pipe, detecting leakage, corrosion, or flaws in the pipeline
