Nicotinamide and quinolinamide are readdy converted to nitriles by treatment with phosphorus pentoxide or thionyl chloride in dimethylformamide. The methylamide of nicotinic acids is converted to the iV-methylimidochloride (X-ISS) by treatment with phosphorus pentachloride.
