Phosphomutase

This enzyme [EC 5.4.2.S], also known as acetylglucos-amine phosphomutase and A -acetylglucosamine-phos-phate mutase, catalyzes the interconversion of M-acetyl-D-glucosamine 1-phosphate and A -acetyl-o-glucosamine 6-phosphate. The enzyme is activated by A -acetyl-o-glu-cosamine 1,6-bisphosphate. 

This enzyme [EC S.4.2.9], also known as phosphoenolpyruvate phosphomutase, catalyzes the interconversion of phosphoenolpyruvate and 3-phosphonopyruvate. This enzyme participates in the biosynthesis of the C—P bond. However, the equilibrium greatly favors phosphoenolpyruvate.

Human phosphomannomutase, which catalyzes the interconversion of mannose 1- and 6- phosphates, appears to carry the phospho group on an aspartate side chain in the sequence DXDX (T/V), which is conserved in a family of phosphomutases and phosphatases.847 The first aspartate in the sequence is phosphorylated during the enzymatic reaction.

The conversion of carboxyphosphonoenolpyruvate (CPEP) (164) into phosphinopyruvate (165) has been shown to be catalyzed by a CPEP phosphonomutase.Phosphoenolpyruvate(PEP)-phosphomutase is another enzyme which also catalyzes C-P bond formation and appears to play a central role in the biosynthesis of (2-aminoethyl)phosphonic acid. Possible mechanisms for the formation of the C-P bond under biological conditions through this latter role have been considered... 

Pig-kidney extracts have some phospho-iV-acetyl-D-glucosamine mutase activity. The ratio of phosphoglucomutase to phospho-AT-acetyl-n-glucos-amine mutase activity is 60 1 in these extracts. In rabbit muscle, this ratio i is 1200 1. Phosphoglucosamine mutase activity was not checked in any of the phosphomutase preparations investigated by this worker.
