Na dissolved in abs. ethanol in a Ng-atmosphere, which is maintained throughout the reaction, most of the excess alcohol removed by distillation in vacuo, abs. ethanol-T and tricyclohexylbenzylphosphonium chloride added, the tritium exchange allowed to proceed during 1 hr. at room temp., then benzaldehyde added, and refluxed 1.5 hrs. frans-1,2-diphenylethylene-l-T. Y 90%.— Tri-cyclohexylphosphinealkylenes give frans-olefins exclusively whereas triphenyl-phosphinealkylenes do not give this selective reaction. F. e. s. H. J. Bestmann, O. Kratzer, and H.
