DuPont began by commissioning a comprehensive inventory of the animals living in the river—a pioneering example of what is now called a biota survey. Two complete baseline surveys were carried out by the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, a year apart, and that work was repeated 18 months after the plant opened.
