Pheromone marine invertebrates

Several books and reviews dealing with general or specialized subjects in pheromones of marine invertebrates and algae have been published.8-13 Here we describe the recent progress regarding such pheromones, with a special focus on their structural and functional diversity. 

Despite these advances, our knowledge about pheromone structure, production, and effects in marine invertebrates is scarce. A Boolean literature search from the past 20 years (1990-2009) showed that most pheromone studies with marine invertebrates have investigated crustaceans, polychaetes, and molluscs (Fig. 1.2). SAPs have been and continue to be actively studied in sea urchins, but they have also been found in starfish (Noshigaki et al, 1996) and in the egg masses of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis (Zatylny et al, 2002). Starfish and cuttlefish SAPs have been termed AsteroSAPs and SepSAPs, respectively. The presence of these peptides, however, is more general and reviews have been published on marine invertebrates and their attractins and other kinds of peptide pheromones (Susswein and Nagle, 2004) for crustaceans, see Rittschof and Cohen (2004).
