Phenylcopper is best prepared by reaction of freshly prepared phenyl-lithium with copper(I) bromide 73), or by phenylmagnesium iodide with copper(I) iodide 124), both in ether. Various methods are claimed to give a purer sample of methylcopper than methods employing lithium and magnesium reagents (see Section II,A,2).
