Iodo-4-phenyl

Treatment of 4-arylamino-8-iodoquinoline 268 with propargyl alcohol in presence of iodo(phenyl)bis(triphenylphosphine) palladium and copper (I)iodide afforded 269 which upon catalytic reduction using Linder s catalyst gave 4//-pyrrolo[3,2,l-(/]quinoline 270 (97H2395) (Scheme 48). 

As found by Engman et al. (1999), sodium alkyltelluroates are excellent reagents for the generation of aryl radicals from the corresponding iodides in the dark. Accordingly, l-(2-iodo-phenyl)-l-methyloxirane reacts with two equivalents of sodium 1-butyltelluroate giving 2,3-dihydro-3-hydroxy-3-methylbenzo[( ]tellurophene, which was isolated in 62% yield. The latter was readily converted into 2,3-dihydro-3-methylbenzo[( ]tellurophene on treatment with a catalytic amount of p-toluenesulfonic acid (94% yield Scheme 7.42).

We used the radical relay process, chlorinating C-9 and then generating the 9(11) double bond, in a synthesis of cortisone 91 [158]. This is a substitute for manufacturing processes in which C-9 or C-ll are hydroxylated by biological fermentation. Also, with templates that directed the chlorination to C-17 of 3a-cholestanol, such as that in 90, we were able to remove the steroid sidechain [159-162].
