Biosynthesis of Phenolic Compounds Derived from Shikimate ( + )-mopanol (35) and ( + )-peltogynol (36). The new intermediates are a,2, 3,4,4 -pentahydroxychalcone (37) and 3-0-methyl-2,3-trans-fustin (38). Biogenesis (Scheme 6) involves a-methoxylation and cyclization of (37) to (38), followed by oxidative cyclization of the 3-0-methyl group and reduction of the 4-position to give (35) and (36).
