Phenanthrolinium cation

No dynamic processes involving intra- or intermolecular transfer of the NH2 group was observed by NMR spectroscopy up to 100 °C (Scheme 23). 1-Amino-1,10-phenanthrolinium cation does not react with 4-methylpyridine and 4-methyl-l,10-phenanthroline with a transfer of the amino group, and it fails to react with mesitylene and anthracene even at elevated temperature. 

There has been some interest in the electrical conductivity and magnetic properties of salts of 1,10-phenanthroline and 1-alkyl-1,10-phenanthrolinium cations with 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane and its anion radical297-302 and related species.303... 

Nitrenium cation is an extremely unstable species (89-91). That is why nitrenium complexes are usually prepared by the interaction of organic compounds with some sources of nitrenium cation (91, 92). Thus, the interaction of O-mesityl-sulfonylhydroxylamine with 1,10-phenanthroline results in the formation of 1 -amino- 1,10-phenanthrolinium mesitylenesulfonate (93-99). The far IR spectra of the [Znd4]2- anion in salts with the 1,10-phenanthrolinium and 2,2-bipyridinium cations have been reported.1039 The anion in the former salt appears to be tetrahedral, while that in the latter is believed to be halogen-bridged. 

The divalent metal ion complexes of 2,2 -dipyridyl and 1,10-phenan-throline derivatives are much more susceptible to pseudobase formation than the corresponding N-alkyl quaternary cations. Thus, pXR+ > 14 for pseudobase formation by the N-methyl monocations of both 2,2 -dipyridyl and 1,10-phenanthroline,46 whereas the Pt2+ complexes of these heterocycles have pKR, values of 9.0 and — 11.5, respectively.361,369 This latter value indicates that Pt(l,10-phenanthroline)i+ is less susceptible to pseudobase formation than the 1,10-phenanthrolinium dications 17 (pKR+ = 9.54) and 18 (pKR+ = 9.17).46...
