Raman scattering is normally of such very low intensity that gas phase Raman spectroscopy is one of the more difficult techniques. This is particularly the case for vibration-rotation Raman spectroscopy since scattering involving vibrational transitions is much weaker than that involving rotational transitions, which were described in Sections 5.3.3 and 5.3.5. For this reason we shall consider here only the more easily studied infrared vibration-rotation spectroscopy which must also be investigated in the gas phase (or in a supersonic jet, see Section 9.3.8). [Pg.173]

Beyond providing bulk structural information about 3-D metal oxide phases, Raman spectroscopy can also provide information about the terminating (and thus 2-D) surface layers of bulk metal oxides. For example, surface Nb=O, V = O, and Mo=O functionalities were detected by Raman spectroscopy for bulk Nb2Os, and for vanadium-niobium, molybdenum-vanadium, molybdenum-niobium, and vanadium-antimony mixed oxide phases (Guerrero-Perez and Banares, 2004 Jehng and Wachs, 1991 Zhao et al., 2003). [Pg.72]

In addition to the capability of Raman spectroscopy in determining the coordination numbers and bond lengths of molybdate species in bismuth molybdate phases, Raman spectroscopy can also be used as an in situ probe for the bismuth molybdates under reaction conditions. In situ Raman studies have been earned out, for example, on the 6-Bi2Mo209 phase under redox conditions, where insights into the surface mechanism of the... [Pg.127]
