Some products advertised as alkaline are actually harmful. Miracle Mineral supplements were available from various websites in a number of countries, the claimed benefits included treatment of HIV, malaria, hepatitis and cancer. Maiket-ing the brand was consequently banned in most countries. The chemical composition of the product explains the life threatening effects it was sodium chlorite (NaC102), which had to be mixed with citric acid before use. Chlorous acid (HCIO2) is first formed in the induced reaction, and then chlorine dioxide (CIO2) is produced.
