Petrographic Studies. Polished thin sections were examined by optical methods to determine original mineralogy and alteration phases. The sections were taken and oriented in such a manner to allow comparison of the microscopic mineralogy with the results of the autoradiography experiments The shale was too fine-grained to be characterized in detail. [Pg.216]

These zones are very close to the subdivisions established by petrographic studies except for some minor differences. The vitrains of these coals have lower hardness values than those of the high volatile bituminous coals of North America. [Pg.303]

Previous NAA raid petrographic studies showed the Iron I Philistine pottery to be locally made in Philistia (3,5, 6). Moreover, several of the wares indicated specified technological aspects of clay selection and treatment this was especially shown by Killebrew in her petrographic and stylistic study of Monochrome pottery from Ekron (3, 7). Thus, the Philistine pottery represents, at least in the early stages, pottery made in Philistia by potters with some Aegean technological skills. [Pg.400]

Petrographic analysis was conducted of a sample of sherds from Groups 1, 2, and 3, of the INAA paste composition groups. The petrographic study was conducted for the purpose of comparing the current INAA analysis to previous petrographic studies of Early Islamic ceramics (33). [Pg.433]

Based on the INAA dataset and the petrographic study, at least two compositionally distinct sources provided the raw clays used for making the monochrome glazed pottery traded into the Deh Luran Plain beginning in the Parthian period aid continuing into at least the twelfth century A.D. It is only with the appearance of sgraffito, apparently first at Basra and later elsewhere that a third compositionally distinct source of raw clay appears. [Pg.440]

Petrographic Work. Petrographic studies required preparation of thin sections. Briefly, rectangular blocks of material were treated with ethanol to remove water and then infiltered with hard grade LR White resin, a low viscosity resin developed for biological work. Following this, the block was mounted on a petrographic slide and a polished thin section produced (see Bailey and Blackson (26) and Blackson and Bailey (27)). A total of 57 sections were produced in this way, at least 1 from each thinner lithofacies unit and 2 from thicker lithofacies units. [Pg.197]

Petrographic studies were conducted using the air-dried pulverized coal mixed with a nonreactive epoxy binder. Air drying was performed at ambient temperature. The ASTM method specifies minus 20 mesh (minus 850um). The Rasa coal sample was finer. The mixture, which contained about 18 to 25 percent... [Pg.267]

Considerable light has recently been shed on this dilemma by two very detailed petrographic studies of the graphitic rocks at Isua. Lepland et al. (2002) examined the mineral apatite, host to the graphite grains studied by Mojzsis et al. (1996). They found that there were two types of apatite in the Isua sediments, distinguished on the basis of their rare... [Pg.229]
