At all events, however, it will be reasonable, in practice, to consider a temperature 30 K lower than the value of SADT calculated herein for a high explosive of the true AC type, having an arbitrary shape and an arbitrary size, confined in an arbitrary closed container of the corresponding shape and size, and placed in the atmosphere under isothermal conditions, as the upper limit temperature for the safe handling of the high explosive. For instance, 25 °C will be the upper limit temperature for the safe handling of nitroglycerin, 45 °C for nitrocellulose, but 35 °C for nitrocellulose contaminated by metals, 80 °C for PETN used for percussion caps, and so forth. [Pg.316]

Tetryl (C7H5N508) is a pale yellow crystalline solid. It is moderately sensitive to initiation by friction and percussion and is used in the form of pressed pellets as primers for explosive compositions that are less sensitive to initiation. It is slightly more sensitive than picric acid and considerably more sensitive than TNT. In the early 1900s, tetryl was used as base charges for blasting caps but now has been replaced by PETN and RDX. During World War II, tetryl was used as a component of explosive mixtures. [Pg.53]
