Pesticide is a generic term used to describe compounds employed in the control, prevention, and elimination of plagues that attack crops and herds. Pesticides are associated with their persistence and toxicity and due to their widespread use in agriculture, these compounds are important sources of environmental contamination. 

Tables 5.2 and 5.3 have already shown clearly that herbicides are the most important single group of pesticides.
