Personal advisers

The quality control section, following sampling and inspection of the finished product, shall check the finished product to established specifications. If the product meets its specifications, there shall be a written notification, signed by the responsible person, advising that the product meets specification and is released for distribution. 

The chief operators on shift during the performance test are the keys to success. These people must be personally advised and consulted before the test commences. Simply handing the chief operator a set of written instructions during the lest is insufficient. 

Allocation of a key worker such as a learning mentor. Connexions personal adviser, education welfare officer (EWO) and so on. This is good advice schools need to have effective co-ordination and to share information on a systematic basis. The lead professional role is discussed in Chapter 4. It is important that the pupil has an identified person whom they can relate to. 

The following is an example of the process in practice, looking at learning mentors and Connexions personal advisers. 

Personal advisers are employed within a Connexions partnership (either direaly, sub contracted or seconded arrangements). 

Most personal advisers are line managed by the Connexions team manager but accountable to an identified senior manager within the school. 

Personal adviser emphasis is on the 13-19 age group, including transition post-16, with a limited role in Key Stage 3. 

Personal advisers have a more holistic/long-term role working all year round enabling pupils and young people to remain engaged with employment, education and training beyond 16. 

Many existing practitioners could take on this role and the DfES has defined the role in its Lead Professional Good Practice Guidance. Examples of such practitioners include personal advisers, health visitors, midwives, youth workers, family workers, nursery nurses, educational welfare officers, school nurses or learning mentors. Hence it is important that schools understand the lead professional role and put in place appropriate support and supervision if one of the Inclusion Team takes on this position. 

Using the available inputs, a range of services will be provided to meet the inclusion agenda. Examples include learning mentors, teaching assistants, LSU staff. Connexions personal advisers, counsellors, the Youth Offending Team, therapists and pastoral support... 

Students should be counted on to take initiative in pursuing their own academic success, but they need continual guidance and direction throughout the time they spend in their programs.
