Periodic moment

As mentioned in Chapter 2, another side effect of these newer types of antidepressants is that they can cause people to show signs of REM behavior disorder, which is characterized by periodic moments of acting out dreams. Rather than having the person stop taking the antidepressant altogether to avoid this, many times a doctor will prescribe a benzodiazepine such as clonazepam (Klonopin) that helps to suppress the REM behavior disorder symptoms.

Long-period moment-tensor inversion is a robust method to characterize the geometry and size of earthquakes worldwide. The Unear relationship between the amplitude of long-period seismograms and the seismic moment leads to precise and accurate measurements of earthquake size. Catalogs of moment tensors provide primary data on active faults and the geometry of regional seismotectonic deformation. 

It is a basic quantity evaluated for earthquakes on all scales from acoustic emissions to large devastating earthquakes (see entries Long-Period Moment-Tensor Inversion The Global CMT Project Reliable Moment Tensor Inversion for Regional- to Local-Distance Earthquakes and Regional Moment Tensor Review An Example from the European-Mediterranean Region ). 

In the last few years, only GCMT solutions are computed inverting also for intermediate period surface waves, variation that allows a lowering of the magnitude threshold down to 5.0 (see entry on Long-Period Moment-Tensor Inversion The Global CMT Project ).
