For most interviewees, the decision to attend graduate school was made while in college. When asked who or what most influenced their decision to attend graduate school, the top response was self, followed closely by mentor (see Fig. 3.5). The follow comments highlights some of these influences. One interviewee recalled All of my principal teachers were impressive to me.. cemented my notion of going to graduate school. He excited all of us about being scientists. He had a tremendous ability to encourage his students. Another interviewee explained his decision to pursue graduate studies in chemistry this way
