Perceived Obstacles to Safety

Besides the self-assessment mentioned, OSHA has published a list of obstacles to a successful Safety and Health Program on the same link as mentioned previously. In this section, they list the supervisor and employee viewpoints of what the obstacles are in preventing progress in the development of an improved safety culture. Although the list segregates the views of the supervisors and employees, I noticed that many of the points are the same or are at least very similar. The obstacles that OSHA has listed are extensive. I have taken OSHA s list and condensed it to what I believe are the key obstacles for both the workers and supervisors. [Pg.162]

Take the time to completely look over this list. If you are under the impression that supervisory staff and hourly staff have viewpoints that differ substantially from one another, I think the findings will be surprising. From what OSHA has published, it appears that in a lot of respects the concerns about obstacles to an effective safety program from both the workers and supervisors perspectives are, for the most part, shared concerns.
