Pentaerythritol may be nitrated by a batch process at 15.25°C using concentrated nitric acid in a stainless steel vessel equipped with an agitator and cooling coils to keep the reaction temperature at 15—25°C. The PETN is precipitated in a jacketed diluter by adding sufficient water to the solution to reduce the acid concentration to about 30%. The crystals are vacuum filtered and washed with water followed by washes with water containing a small amount of sodium carbonate and then cold water. The water-wet PETN is dissolved in acetone containing a small amount of sodium carbonate at 50°C and reprecipitated with water the yield is about 95%. Impurities include pentaerythritol trinitrate, dipentaerythritol hexanitrate, and tripentaerythritol acetonitrate. Pentaerythritol tetranitrate is shipped wet in water—alcohol in packing similar to that used for primary explosives.

Note. For medicinal purposes pentaerythritol tetranitrate is supplied diluted with an inert substance such as lactose, since the undiluted compound may explode upon percussion or on exposure to heat. 

Viscous liq. itjf 1.4941. dj 1.554. Viscosity 166.8 oenti-stokes at 40° 77.8 at 50s. Soly in water 0.705 g/100 ml at 20 in benzene 21,40 g/100 ml at 20. Very sol in ethanol, ether. Forms a cryst hydrate, mp 32", when washed with water and allowed to stand overnight at 20s returns to unhydrated form when allowed to stand at 60s for 2 hrs. Procedure. Dissolve 1 g of the sample in 0-5 ml. of pyridine, and dilute to 10 ml. with an aqueous supporting electrolyte containing 0-1 m potassium chloride and I O M ammonium chloride. This medium holds nitroglycerine and cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine in solution while precipitating pentaerythritol tetranitrate. Filter the mixed solution through Whatman No. 40 filter paper polarograph the filtrate and observe the curves of nitroglycerine and cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine. 

Diluted Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate B,P.C. This is a mixture of pentaerythritol tetranitrate with lactose, or with a mixture of three parts of lactose and one part of starch, containing about 20 per cent of C5H8O12N4, Mol. Wt. 316 2. The content of pentaerythritol tetranitrate can be determined by direct extraction with acetone, cautious evaporation and drying in vacuo.
