Penicillin mechanisms of action

From this brief description of penicillin mechanism of action and structural requirements, two likely sites of drug resistance stand out. First, if the bacteria were able to break open the beta-lactam ring then the drug would lose its pharmacological activity. Second, if mutations of PBP were to occur, preventing penicillins from binding to the PBP, the penicillins would lose their pharmacological activity. Both have been described in clinical isolates and will be discussed next.
