Pectin bulking effects

In another study, Cummings (28) reported that an increase in cereal fiber intake from 17 to 45 g/d Increased the fecal weight from 79 to 228 g/d and diluted the fecal bile acids. Kay and Truswell (29) showed that adding wheat fiber to the diet decreased the concentration of fecal bile acids and neutral steroids because of the bulking effect of fiber, whereas the addition of pectin to the diet Increased the fecal steroid and bile acid output. These results suggest that the effect on fecal bile acid excretion may depend on the type of fiber consumed. [Pg.6]
