Pathways Are Regulated by Controlling Amounts and Activities of Enzymes

Pathways Are Regulated by Controlling Amounts and Activities of Enzymes [Pg.234]

The two most important principles governing the regulation of biochemical pathways are economy and flexibility. Organisms regulate their metabolic activities to avoid deficiencies or excesses of metabolic products. If a significant change occurs in the environment, such as a shift in the concentration or kinds of nutrients, the organism must quickly adjust its metabolism if it is to survive. [Pg.234]

Pathways are regulated at two levels (1) they are regulated by controlling the amounts of enzyme (see chapters 30 and 31) and (2) they are regulated by controlling the activity of existing enzymes. In this chapter we focus on the latter. Important aspects of this subject were already dealt with in chapter 9. [Pg.234]
