Parotid gland swelling

Parotid gland swelling may occur with prolonged use.

Salivary Glands A case of xmilateral parotid gland swelling in a 35-year-old female following clozapine initiation and which resolved on discontinuation is reported [129 ]. Mumps is an acute viral infection transmitted by airborne droplets. Mumps is considered to be a childhood infection affecting those between 5 and 15 years of age. Classic symptoms of mumps include fever, chills, malaise, and enlargement of the parotid glands, which may be unilateral or bilateral. The swelling of the parotid glands may result in the patient experiencing a dry mouth because saliva flow is blocked. 

Reversible swelling of the parotid glands has been reported occasionally after the use of chlorhexidine mouthwashes this is probably due to mechanical obstruction of the parotid duct by over-rigorous rinsing (SEDA-11, 481) (29). 

The overall incidence of adverse effects was about 2% when using inhaled cromoglicate (3). Most of the observed adverse effects are mild and transient and do not require withdrawal of therapy. Adverse effects such as laryngeal edema, swollen parotid glands, bronchospasm, joint swelling, nausea, cough, headache, nasal congestion, rash, and urticaria have been reported in only one in 10 000 patients (SEDA-12, 142). There has been one unusual report of obstructive sialadenitis caused by local compression of the excretory ducts of the parotid glands due to deposits of gold in the intraparotid lymphoid tissues there was swelling of both parotid glands on eating (41). 

In randomized comparison of Lipiodol ultrafluid (ethio-dized oil) with melumine diatrizoate 290 for sialography in 60 patients, pain and swelling of the parotid gland was more frequent after Lipiodol UF (303). 

Mumps virus infects the parotid glands to cause swelling and a general viraemia. Complications include pancreatitis, meningitis and orchitis, the latter occasionally leading to male sterility. Infections can also cause permanent unilateral deafness at any age. In the absence of vaccination, infection occurs in >90 % of individuals by age 15 years. A live attenuated mumps vaccine has been available since 1967...
