When compounding general-purpose elastomers, aromatic, naphthenic, or paraffinic process oils are commonly used. However, for certain specialty elastomer compounds, the more expensive synthetic ester plasticizers must be used for reasons of chemical compatibility. 

Paraffinic process oils are used in large volumes for rubber compounds based on elastomers that are nonpolar and aliphatic in chemical structure. For example, extremely large quantities of paraffinic process oil are used with EPDM. Also, some grades of paraffinic oils are very light in color. This lightness is very important for applications where appearance and color are important. Paraffinic oils tend to have better color control. Paraffinic oils are sometimes more expensive than naphthenic oils for this reason. 

ATM— paraffinic process oils are essentially incompatible with CR and are to be avoided.
