Numerous highly selective ester hydrolyses catalyzed by a-chymotrypsin [115] and papain have featured in excellent reviews [258] and the examples shown above should illustrate the synthetic potential, aheady fully established in 1976. The major requirements for substrates of type 1 (see Scheme 2.21) to be selectively hydrolyzed by a-chymotrypsin are the presence of a polar and a hydrophobic group on the a-center (R and R, respectively) to mimic the natural substrates - amino acids. [Pg.74]
