Palmitoyl dextran

PalDl-Magl precipitation/coating solution 2 g palmitoyl dextran PalDl (see Note 2) plus 15 ml of 28-30% ammonium hydroxide solution filled with water to a total volume of 50 ml and degassed with argon/helium.

These palmitoyl dextrans [PD] are all soluble in water. Vesicles are obtained by slow hydration of l-stearyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (SOPC, two Cjg chains, one saturated and the other one unsaturated) in pure water.

In addition, esters of dextran-bearing palmitoyl groups and phosphate functions can be used for the preparation of specifically modified liposomes, which are exploited for the entrapment of peptides such as hirudin, the most potent inhibitor of thrombin [105]. 

In order to study the effect of hydrophilic-hydrophobic polymers on the morphology of oblate vesicles, we have grafted dextran polymers of various molecular weights with different percentages of palmitoyl chains (Figure 26.10).
