In metals, the reaction of hydrogen with a material is represented as follows [66]  

This is possible because the conduction electrons are delocalized in the whole crystal, as was previously analyzed, and the protons are surrounded by conduction band electrons [67], Consequently, in metals, the proton can have a high coordination number, and can be interstitially located in tetrahedral and/or octahedral sites [66],
