Phosphorescent pigments are used in military appHcations, plastics, and paints. Zinc sulfide doped with Ag" (blue) cations, or with Cu" (green) cations are important pigments for the production of color television screens. Phosphorescent sulfide pigments are produced in the United States by Radium Corp. and by Conrad Precision Ind., Inc. 

The choice of parameter used in the determination of size distribution should include consideration of the information needed in the interpretation of the data. For example, in the case of a manufacturer of paint pigment, the size parameter that best describes the hiding power (performance of the pigment) is the projected area of particles. A powdered catalyst manufacturer is primarily concerned with surface-area equivalence. 

Paints. Paints account for perhaps 3% of sulfur consumption (see Paint). The main sulfur use is for the production of titanium dioxide pigment by the sulfate process. Sulfuric acid reacts with ilmenite or titanium slag and the sulfur remains as a ferrous sulfate waste product. Difficulties with this process have led to the development of the chloride process (see Pigments, inorganic Titanium compounds). 

Zinc yellow became an important corrosion-inhibiting pigment for aircraft during World War II. However, the war production rate of 11,000 t/yr has not since been reached. Now, 2inc yellow is widely used for corrosion inhibition on auto bodies, light metals, and steel, and in combination with red lead and ferric oxide for stmctural steel painting. 

Cobalt is used as a blue phosphor in cathode ray tubes for television, in the coloration of polymers and leather goods, and as a pigment for oil and watercolor paints. Organic cobalt compounds that are used as colorants usually contain the azo (51) or formazon (52) chromophores. 

Among these dye classes, anthraquiaone dyes are ia an important position ia reactive dyes and vat dyes for cellulose fibers, disperse dyes for polyester, and acid dyes for polyamide. Application for high performance organic pigments for plastics and paints are also important areas. 

Capillary Flow Moisture which is held in the interstices of solids, as liquid on the surface, or as free moisture in cell cavities, moves by gravity and capiUarity, provided that passageways for continuous flow are present. In diying, liquid flow resulting from capiUarity appUes to liquids not held in solution and to aU moisture above the fiber-saturation point, as in textiles, paper, and leather, and to all moisture above the equiUbrium moisture content at atmospheric saturations, as in fine powders and granular solids, such as paint pigments, minerals, clays, soU, and sand.
