Packed column aeration

Packed column aeration—air flows up, water is sprayed down (these are efficient and the most common type). 

Packed column aeration (2,4,6-9,11-13,22), also called PTA or air-stripping, mixes water with air to volatilize contaminants. The volatilized contaminants are either released directly to the atmosphere or are treated and then released. PCA is used primarily to remove VOCs, but is commoidy used to remove hydrogen sulfide and CO. In this application, the aeration unit is described as degasifier.

Activated carbon adsorption is a well-established process for adsorption of organics in wastewater, water, and air streams. Granular activated carbon (GAG) packed in a filter bed or of powdered activated carbon (PAG) added to clarifiers or aeration basins is used for wastewater treatment. In the pesticide industry, GAG is much more widely used than PAG. Figure 10 shows the process flow diagram of a GAG system with two columns in series, which is common in the pesticide industry [11].
