Example 6 Solvent Rate for Absorption Let us consider the absorption of acetone from air at atmospheric pressure into a stream of pure water fed to the top of a packed absorber at 25 C. The inlet gas at 35 C contains 2 percent by volume of acetone and is 70 percent saturated with water vapor (4 percent H2O by volume). The mole-fraction acetone in the exit gas is to be reduced to 1/400 of the inlet value, or 50 ppmv. For 100 kmol of feed-gas mixture, how many Idlomoles of fresh water should be fed to provide a positive-driving force throughout the pacldug How many transfer units will be needed according to the classical adiabatic method What is the estimated height of pacldug required if Hqq = 0.70 m ... [Pg.1360]

A packed absorber (Figure 22.3) has been designed to reduce the acetone concentration in 40 kmol/h of air from a mole fraction of 0.02 to 0.001. Acetone is absorbed into pure water at 20 kmol/h. Acetone is recovered from the effluent liquid, and the water, which is assumed pure, is recycled to the absorption unit. After a period of successful operation, it is observed that the exit acetone mole fraction in air is now 0.002. [Pg.727]

The purified pine bark tannin was obtained in the following manner. The phloem of freshly felled loblolly pine trees was removed by carefully peeling the outer bark away at the cork cambium and then peeling the white phloem from the xylem cambium. Strips of phloem were cut into sections of about 2 to 5 in2 and immediately immersed in acetone-water (70 30, v/v). The extraction flasks were kept at ambient temperature, protected from exposure to light, for 48 hr, after which the solvent was recovered by filtration. The acetone was removed under vacuum on a rotary evaporator, and the aqueous solution was extracted four times with an approximately equal volume of ethyl acetate to remove low molecular weight phenolics. The remaining water-soluble extract was freeze-dried. Aliquots (about 50 gm) were redissolved in methanol-water (1 1, v/v), and the solutions were applied to 2.4 X 90 cm Sephadex LH-20 columns packed in this same solvent. The columns were eluted with methanol-water until no more colored material was eluted. The condensed tannin polymers absorbed... [Pg.244]
