Oxytocin milk letdown

Hormones are not allowed in organic production. This includes the range from the common milk letdown hormone (oxytocin) to lutylase which is used in conventional dairy to induce egg production by the ovary. Also prohibited of course is the use of the controversial growth hormone known as rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone). 

Oxytcxrin preparations are widely used with or without umniotomy to induce and stimulate labor. Although injection Is the u.sual mute of administration, the sublingual route is extremely effective. Sublingual and intranasal spray (Oxytocin Nasal Solution. USP) routes of administration also will stimuliile milk letdown. 

When administering oxytocin intranasally to facilitate the letdown of milk, the nurse places the patient in an upright position, and with the squeeze bottle held upright, administers the prescribed number of sprays to one or both nostrils. The patient then waits 2 to 3 minutes before breastfeeding the infant or pumping the breasts. If a breast pump is being used, the nurse records the amount of milk pumped from the breasts. 

Oxytocin (Pitocin, Syntocinon) causes milk release (letdown) by stimulating contraction of the myoepithelial cells of the milk ducts in lactating mammary glands this forces milk from the alveoli of the breast. Oxytocin release is stimulated by suckling and by auditory and visual stimuli, such as a baby s cry. Oxytocin is available as a nasal spray, which is used as an aid to lactation when milk ejection is impaired.
