In addition to demonstrating the occurrence of acute post-traumatic oxygen radical reactions and their association with pathophysiological events, the establishment of their importance, relative to other factors, is ultimately dependent upon a demonstration that by interrupting them, chronic neurological recovery can be enhanced. Thus, attempts have been made to show that early treatment of spinal-cord injured animals with bonafide antioxidants or agents with antioxidant properties can beneficially affect sensory and motor recovery. 

This simple reaction has been exploited extensively in several cell-free systems for studying oxygen-radical reactions. The deoxyribose assay is a sensitive assay for hydroxyl radicals. However, it may not be specific for this species, and it has been suggested that deoxyribose can be degraded by ferryl haem species, although we have found no such interaction in our conditions. 

Curcumin has both antioxidant and pro-oxidant effects in oxygen radical reactions, acting as a scavenger of hydroxy radicals or a catalyst in the formation of hydroxy radicals, depending on the experimental conditions [18-20]. The antioxidant effect of curcumin presumably arises from scavenging of biological free radicals.
