Figure 10. An hypothetical model for a cyclic water splitting system, based on a semiconductor particle immobilized in a polymerized membrane and having access to both aqueous solutions on each side of the membrane. Specific and selective coating by catalysts leads to simultaneous and separate hydrogen and oxygen generation on each side of the polymerized membrane. Figure 10. Cobalt complexes derived from Schiff bases 388 catalyzed the hydroxyacylation of electron-deficient alkenes (Fig. 90) [431, 432]. Thus, methyl acrylate 387 reacted with aliphatic aldehydes 386 in the presence of 5 mol% of the in situ generated catalyst, molecular oxygen, and acetic anhydride to 2-acyloxy-4-oxoesters 389 in 56-77% yield. When acetic anhydride was omitted, the yields of products were lower and mixtures of the free hydroxy compounds and acylated compounds resulting from Tishchenko reactions were obtained. Electron-rich alkenes did not undergo the transformation, since the addition of the acyl radical is much slower. The acylcobalt species inserts oxygen instead and acts as an epoxidation catalyst. [Pg.295]

Oxygen-blown ATR with natural gas is used today in very large units that generate a mixture of CO and H2 for the Fischer-Tropsch process or methanol synthesis. This is attractive in part because the units can produce the hydrogen-to-carbon monoxide ratio needed in the synthesis step. Since the heat of reaction is added by combustion with oxygen, the catalyst can be incorporated as a fixed bed that can be scaled up to achieve further benefits of larger plant size in both the... [Pg.216]

Perovskite membranes are interesting systems not only for their possible applications (e.g., fuel cells, oxygen generators, oxidation catalysts) but also for the fundamental fascination of fast oxygen transport in solid-state ionic. [Pg.1135]

Catalyst systems for olefin metathesis are described in detail in Ch. 2 and almost invariably contain a transition metal compound. These are sometimes effective by themselves but often require the presence of a second compound (cocatalyst), and sometimes a third (promoter). The systems most commonly used are based on the chlorides, oxides, or other easily accessible compounds of Mo, Ru, W, or Re. Os or Ir compounds are sometimes used, and occasionally Ti, V, Cr, Co, Nb, Rh, or Ta compounds. Typical cocatalysts are EtAlCl2, R3AI and ICjSn (R = Ph, Me, Et, Bu), while promoters often contain oxygen, e.g. O2, EtOH, PhOH. There is now much evidence, detailed in Ch. 3, to show that such first-generation catalyst systems act... [Pg.1]
