Figure 1 Carotid chemoreception activities plotted against Pq resemble Hb-02 dissociation curves. Oxygen equilibrium curves (SO2 %) corresponding to activity of carotid chemo-receptors at three measurements of arterial Pco and pH plotted against arterial Pq. The maximal activity at pHa 7.25 and Pa02 of 25torr was taken as 100% desaturation of a hypothetical heme-containing ehromophore group. The curves resemble O2 equilibrium curves of a polymeric ehromophore group with a Bohr effect (1). Figure 1 Carotid chemoreception activities plotted against Pq resemble Hb-02 dissociation curves. It is pertinent in this connection to observe that when hemoglobin is partly-oxidized the oxygen equilibrium curve becomes more nearly hyperbolic (i.e., n decreases) and is shifted to the left (i.e., py, decreases) corresponding to an increase of oxygen afiSnity (38.1). [Pg.454]
