The molecular structures of the three chlorine oxides that are sufficiently stable to be investigated in the gas phase are shown in Fig. 20.13. In Chapter 17 we described the OCl bond in oxygen dichloride as a single bond. The CIO bond in CIO2 is seen to be 23 pm shorter and 25% stronger than in OCI2. When a molecular formula has one atom of each element, the prefix (mono) is not used in the name. Thus, the name of BrCl is bromine chloride. However, two or more atoms of an element are indicated by using a prefix. Thus, the name of the molecular compound OCI2 contains the prefix di, oxygen dichloride. [Pg.190]
