Oxidative rearrangements coupling reactions

Organocatalysis has also found applications in the area of asymmetric oxidative biaryl coupling reactions. Very recently, the groups of Kurti" and List" independently devised atroposelective [3,3]-rearrangement reactions of N,N -diaryl hydrazines to synthesize enantioenriched BINAM derivatives (Scheme 3.16). 

Oxidation of organonitrogen compounds is an important process from both industrial and synthetic viewpoints . N-oxides are obtained by oxidation of tertiary amines (equation 52), which in some cases may undergo further reactions like Cope elimination and Meisenheimer rearrangement . The oxygenation products of secondary amines are generally hydroxylamines, nitroxides and nitrones (equation 53), while oxidation of primary amines usually afforded oxime, nitro, nitroso derivatives and azo and azoxy compounds through coupling, as shown in Scheme 17. Product composition depends on the oxidant, catalyst and reaction conditions employed. 

Smith et al. have developed a very elegant route to complex polyol structures by sequential dithiane-epoxide coupling reactions (Scheme 7) [16]. Following the work of Tietze [17], 2-silyl-1,3-dithianes 42 are deprotonated with /BuLi in ether and converted into the stable lithium alk-oxides 43 with enantiomerically pure epoxides. A fast 1,4-Brook rearrangement occurs only after the addition of 0.3 equivalents of hexamethyl-phosphoramide (HMPA) or 1,3-dimethylhexahy-dro-2-pyrimidone (DMPU) to the reaction mixture.
