Oxidation aluminium nitride

Aluminium nitride can also be prepared by heating a mixture of aluminium oxide and carbon in nitrogen in an electric arc furnace ... [Pg.156]

The carbides and nitrides are well known for their hardness and strength, and this section will briefly compare a number of these properties with those of the pure metals. Concentration will be placed here on the first row compounds, since these constitute a complete series, and Mo and W, since these are the most commonly studied metals. As will be shown, the physical and mechanical properties of carbides and nitrides resemble those of ceramics not those of metals. Comparisons will be made with boron carbide (B4C), silicon carbide (SiC), aluminium nitride (AIN), silicon nitride (Si3N4), aluminium oxide (A1203), and diamond, as representative ceramic materials. [Pg.13]

Chromium aluminium nitride has shown promising properties for cutting and wear applications, such as high hardness, wear- and oxidation resistance. Increasing the amount of aluminium in Cr-N coatings increases the oxidation resistance of the film by formation of an aluminium oxide layer on the surfaced There are many reports on thin film production of CrAlN-films , but the material is much less studied in bulk form. [Pg.3]

Self-bonded SiC, sintered SiC, aluminium nitride (AIN), SiAlON-bonded SiC, titanium boride—SiC compositiOTi, oxide materials were considered to be promising for application as a side lining of the reduction cell. [Pg.170]

SFfi/ inert gas mixtures are used in the production of magnesium and magnesium alloys and the cleaning of aluminium melts. It functions as a protective gas to prevent ignition, oxidation and nitride formation as well as for removing oxides and solid inclusions. [Pg.209]

Only thallium of the Group III elements is affected by air at room temperature and thalliumflll) oxide is slowly formed. All the elements, however, burn in air when strongly heated and, with the exception of gallium, form the oxide M2O3 gallium forms a mixed oxide of composition GaO. In addition to oxide formation, boron and aluminium react at high temperature with the nitrogen in the air to form nitrides (BN and AIN). [Pg.144]

Aluminium oxide may be prepared in the laboratory by heating the hydroxide (p. 151) or by heating powdered aluminium in air, when the oxide is formed together with some nitride. The reaction ... [Pg.150]

Catalysts can be metals, oxides, sulfides, carbides, nitrides, acids, salts, virtually any type of material. Solid catalysts also come in a multitude of forms and can be loose particles, or small particles on a support. The support can be a porous powder, such as aluminium oxide particles, or a large monolithic structure, such as the ceramics used in the exhaust systems of cars. Clays and zeolites can also be solid catalysts. [Pg.167]
