Shen This talisman depicts a reed tied in a circle to represent the orbit of the sun and, therefore, it became a symbol of the cycle of time and eternity. It was commonly made of lapis lazuli or carnelian and laid on the dead to ensure eternal life. Symbolically, the Shen is related to the symbol of a snake forming a circle by biting its tail, called an ouroboros, which became an important alchemical symbol.

Here is the mystery the serpent Ouroboros this composition which in its ensemble is devoured and melted, dissolved and transformed by the fermentation or putrefaction. It becomes a deep green and the color of gold is derived from it. It is from it that is derived the red called...

A particularly attractive aryl amide foldamer is talibiter (10.1) named after the mythological wyrm Ouroboros that Kekule claimed inspired his structure of benzene (Figure 10.5),6 which folds back on itself in a spiral conformation such that the pyrrole unit on one end is close to the other end of the molecule. The solution conformation of the foldamer was determined using NMR spectroscopic methods as described in Box 6.1. 

Could the ouroboros also be a symbol for the law of the conservation of matter, far predating Lavoisier Perhaps only Kekule would have known for sure.
