Shen This talisman depicts a reed tied in a circle to represent the orbit of the sun and, therefore, it became a symbol of the cycle of time and eternity. It was commonly made of lapis lazuli or carnelian and laid on the dead to ensure eternal life. Symbolically, the Shen is related to the symbol of a snake forming a circle by biting its tail, called an ouroboros, which became an important alchemical symbol. [Pg.36]

Figure 6.2 A ceremonial Masonic leather apron bears several symbols. Inside the circular ouroboros in the center is the primary Masonic symbol, the square and the compass joined, which is a reference to the alchemical squaring of the circle. The skull of Hiram is in the middle of that, and the landscape below is the Temple of Solomon with the two pillars, named Boaz and jakin, in front. The great pyramids are in the bottom left comer. A particularly attractive aryl amide foldamer is talibiter (10.1) named after the mythological wyrm Ouroboros that Kekule claimed inspired his structure of benzene (Figure 10.5),6 which folds back on itself in a spiral conformation such that the pyrrole unit on one end is close to the other end of the molecule. The solution conformation of the foldamer was determined using NMR spectroscopic methods as described in Box 6.1. [Pg.633]

Could the ouroboros also be a symbol for the law of the conservation of matter, far predating Lavoisier Perhaps only Kekule would have known for sure. [Pg.78]

FIGURE 55. The ouroboros—a symbol for completeness, cycle of life, and even the conservation of matter. The ouroboros continuously devours itself as it regenerates. Did August Kekule actually dream about the ouroboros when he postulated that benzene was a cyclic compound (From Atalanta Fugiens, from The Roy G. Neville Historical Chemical Library, a collection in the Othmer Library, CHF.)... [Pg.79]
