Other Orally Active Drugs

The steroids, as found in mammalian systems, are seldom use-1 ul as drugs due to a fairly general lack of oral activity. Most ]>( the agents exert other actions in addition to the desired one. 

Because of the possibility of an antacid interfering with the activity of other oral drugs no oral drug should be administered within 1 to 2 hours of an antacid. 

Altretamine has shown activity in the treatment of ovarian and lung cancer. This orally administered drug has the dose-limiting side effects of anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping. Other side effects include neuropathy, agitation, confusion, and depression. 

Orai Administration The oral route is the most common way of administering a drug. For a drug to be absorbed into the bloodstream, it has to be soluble in the fluids of our gastrointestinal tract. Drugs are often formulated with excipients (components other than the active drug) to improve manufacturing and dissolution processes (see Section 5.6).
