Polyimide. Polyimide is a biaxiaHy oriented high performance film that is tough, flexible, and temperature- and combustion-resistant. Its room temperature properties compare to poly(ethylene terephthalate), but it retains these good characteristics at temperatures above 400°C. Its electrical resistance is good and it is dimensionally stable. The principal detriment is fairly high moisture absorbance. The main uses are for electrical insulation, particularly where high temperatures are prevalent or ionizing radiation is a problem. The films may be coated to reduce water absorption and enhance... [Pg.377]

For at least l h per week, 75 of the patients saw psychotherapeutically trained female social workers with whom they were able to discuss the problems preoccupying them at the time. These therapies were supportive and not primarily analytically orientated (high-contact group). The remaining 75 patients saw a psychiatrist for about 15 min per month, told him how they felt and discussed any changes in the medication (low-contact group). [Pg.280]

The first essential coupling rule states that the phosphorylation from ATP requires prior binding at the cytoplasmically orientated high-affinity uptake sites of those ions that are to be transported away from the cytoplasm (henceforth designated a-type ions, see Table 2). As long as the extracy toplasmic discharge sites have not yet been vacated by release of the translocated a-type ions, the phosphorylation reaction is fully reversible. After extracytoplasmic dissociation of the a-type ion, reversal of pump phosphorylation with resulting ATP synthesis can still... [Pg.9]

Spectra of Crystals Infrared Dichroism. The spectrum of a single crystal observed in polarized light depends upon the orientation of the crystal axes relative to the plane of polarization. A similar situation exists for macroscopically oriented high polymers, obtained by extruding or stretching polymeric materials such as nylon, polyvinyl alcohol, and polyethylene. Ellis and co-workers were the first to make systematic studies of IR dichroism in H bonded systems (604, 779, 780). Further attention was drawn to the method by Mann and Thompson (1334), Crooks (463), and Ambrose, Elliott, and Temple (595, 38, 589, 4). [Pg.115]

The p-aryl amides are produced from terephthalic acid and p-phenylenediamine. They are noted for high strength and thermal resistance that arise from extensive conjugation and linear geometry that enhances chain orientation. High-strength fibers with similar properties can be manufactured from aramids and melamine. [Pg.775]
