Similar structural diversity has been established for the heavier alkali metals also but it is unnecessary to deal with this in detail. The sUTictural chemistry of the organometallic compounds in particular, and of related complexes, has been well reviewed.

Frankland discovered the fundamental principle of valency—the combining power of atoms to form compounds. He gave the chemical bond its name and popularized the notation we use today for writing chemical formulas. He codiscovered helium, helped found synthetic organic and structural chemistry, and was the father of organometallic chemistry. He was also the first person to thoroughly analyze the gases from different types of coal and—dieters take note—the first to measure the calories in food.

A large number of all citations to organozinc compounds deal with the use of these compounds as precursors for solid-state materials, particularly for MOCVD applications. The latter area has become so interdisciplinary and grown to such an extent that the editors of this edition considered it prudent to devote an entire volume (Volume 12) to the use of organometallic compounds in materials chemistry. While the syntheses and structures of potential organozinc precursors for such applications will be treated in this chapter, the detailed aspects of the conversion of organozinc compounds to solid-state materials are the topic of Volume 12. 

Development of new methodologies for formation of carbon-carbon bonds has been one of the major tasks in organic chemistry. Obviously, organometallic compounds, particularly zinc derivatives, have found great use in such reactions. During the past several years, there have been several significant reports of nickel- and palladium-catalyzed reactions of dialkylzincs and alkylzinc halides with alkyl halides of diverse structure.
