Organometallic complexes of technetium-99 can be studied by the traditional physical tools used in chemistry. Techniques like infrared, multinuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectroscopies, as well as magnetic susceptibility (to determine the number of unpaired electrons and thus the oxidation state) and X-ray crystallography are the main methods to study these complexes. X-ray diffraction methods are particularly important since only one small crystal is needed to determine the complete structure of the compound.

The most convenient route to organometallic technetium complexes is directly from 3, under reaction conditions which allow working in a normal laboratory. There are basically three essential compounds that fulfil these conditions and can be prepared in a one step synthesis starting from 3, and which are convenient precursors for subsequent chemistry due to their reactivity (Scheme 1). 

The technitium +4 is then used to form the labelled organometallic technetium complexes that are absorbed in specific organs in the body. Many examples of this use of tin in the preparation of labelled technetium derivatives are given in a review by Noronha60.

Among the natural and artificial radioactive elements (Tc, Pm, Po, Fr, Ra, Ac, and actinides), coordination and organometallic compounds of only technetium and the actinide series (An) are well represented at the present time. The interest in their metal complexes has been motivated by the extended use of Tc, available in kilogram amounts, for medical and technical purposes, meanwhile actinides are important on their own for the nuclear industry. A lot of original papers, reviews, and chapters of some books are dedicated to Tc and An complexes [263-281], In the present section, dedicated to the coordination and organometallic chemistry of the actinides and Tc, we intend to present the synthetic techniques for these compounds according to their ligand nature.
