Hydroboration is widely employed to obtain an anti-Markovnikov alcohol from an olefin. Addition of diborane to the double bond produces an organoborane intermediate. Three equivalents of the olefin are needed to consume the BH3 and a trialkylborane is produced. Reaction with basic H202 converts the carbon-boron bond to a carbon oxygen bond. This process is effective and widely used. [Pg.200]

One of the most useful methods for preparing alcohols from alkenes is the hydroboration reaction reported in 1959 by H. C. Brown. Hydroboration involves addition of a B-H bond of borane, BH3, to an alkene to yield an organoborane intermediate, RBH2 ... [Pg.242]

Propargylic organoboranes derived from the corresponding lithium reagents react with aldehydes and certain ketones with high regioselectivity to give trimethylsilyl-substituted a-allenic alcohols (Scheme... [Pg.84]

Alcohols from organometallics. Direct oxidation of organoboranes and organozincs is useful. The former reaction in perfluoroalkanes (e.g., C FpBr) provides alcohols with retention of configuration. [Pg.243]

Preparation.—Some of the syntheses of carbinols that were mentioned in earlier Reports and that use organoboranes in carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions (6,157 4, 139 2, 112, ere.) have been surveyed in a published lecture. - A route to some benzylic alcohols from the corresponding phenols that incorporates a Wittig rearrangement (Scheme 1) has been reported. ... [Pg.161]

Several alkylboranes are available in enantiomerically enriched or pure form and can be used to prepare enantiomerically enriched alcohols and other compounds available via organoborane intermediates.196 One route to enantiopure boranes is by hydroboration of readily available terpenes that occur naturally in enantiomerically enriched or pure form. The most thoroughly investigated of these is bis-(isopinocampheyl)borane (Ipc)2BH), which can be prepared in 100% enantiomeric purity from the readily available terpene a-pinene.197 Both enantiomers are available. [Pg.347]
