Clearly, this choice of a reference set of organic reactions is arbitrary, not necessarily representative of the whole set of organic reaction types described in the literature, and therefore not free from bias. However, it does give some indication of the relative importance of the various reaction schemes. It is quite clear that the reaction scheme shown in Figure 3-13 (R1 of Table 3-3) comprises the majority of organic reactions in most compilations of reactions it will account for more than 50 % of all reactions. 

Clearly, such statistics are impossible to obtain on a worldwide basis. However, it is quite dear that organic reaction types that follow reaction scheme R1 (Table 3-3, Figure 3-13) are among the most frequently performed. This shifts the balance even further in the direction of this reaction scheme, lending overwhelming importance to it. 

Scheme 4.2 shows various organic reaction types and Figure 4.5 shows their corresponding radial pentagons based on actual experimental data. When these diagrams are compared side by side it is possible to visualize at a glance which types of reactions are better atom economical and reaction mass efficient performers than others. In particular, it is possible to pick out which of the four factors in equation (4.1) is responsible for a low or high RME...

This is a commercial synthesis of an important new compound and uses only chemistry that you have met in the first 24 chapters of the book. There is an alternative view of acid-base reactions that relies on the Lewis acid-base definition but has been used to classify a wide range of organic reaction types. Cations are classified as Lewis acids, anions are Lewis bases and salts are viewed as acid-base complexes. When one writes the normal acid-base equation, certain conventions are observed. 

Three methodologies are compared the classical solution method, the Merrifield approach and an automated (the "mediatcontinuous monitoring. The utilization of PRs as general acyl transfer reagents is also elaborated. ITie described approaches are not limited to peptide synthesis, but may be applicable to a wide range of organic reaction types. 

Key organic reaction types include nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition, electrophilic substitution and redox reactions. Reaction mechanisms vary and help in understanding the different types of reaction taking place.

Other importaiit organic reaction types are elimination, oxidation-reduction, and isomerization. An elinuwuition reaction is one in which a double bond forms and a molecule such as water is removed. The dehydration of 2-phosphoglycerate to form phosphoenolpyruvate (Figure 10.11), one of the steps in carbohydrate metabolism, is an example of an elimination reaction.
