Organic nonlinear optical crystals

Ionic chromophores in which the packing is mainly driven by the stronger Coulomb interactions among ions are an approach [25-28]. Relevant results have been obtained with Af-methyl-stilbazolium salts or IV-phenyl-piridinium salts. In particular, DAST (4-dimethylamino-A-methylstilbazolium 4-toluene-sulphonate) is presently known as one of the best organic nonlinear optical crystal (SHG efficiency 1,000 times urea).

Nonlinear Optical Devices. A transparent, optically active, sol—gel-derived organic—inorganic glass has been synthesized (68). This hybrid consists of a 2,4-dinitroaminophenylpropyl-triethoxysilane covalently bound to a siUcon alkoxide-derived siUca network. This hybrid exhibits a strong electric field-induced second harmonic signal and showed no signs of crystallization.

The crude product is at once purified according to the usual methods of organic chemistry. Then it is essential to lower the impurities rate to a threshold compatible with crystal growth and especially with the use of the materials for nonlinear optics (10 to 100 parts per million).
