Organic chemistry aldehydes and ketones

The carbonyl group occupies a central place in organic chemistry. Aldehydes and ketones—compounds such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, and 2-butanone—are very important industrial chemicals used by themselves and as starting materials for a host of other substances. For example, in 1985 8.2 billion lb of formaldehyde-containing plastics were produced in the United States.
