Once the precipitates grow beyond a critical size they lose coherency and then, in order for deformation to continue, dislocations must avoid the particles by a process known as Orowan bowing(23). This mechanism appHes also to alloys strengthened by inert dispersoids. In this case a dislocation bends between adjacent particles until the loop becomes unstable, at which point it is released for further plastic deformation, leaving a portion behind, looped around the particles. The smaller the interparticle spacing, the greater the strengthening. [Pg.114]

Electrostatic effects have long been recognized in commercial HPLC columns for SEC of proteins (15,21,22). The usual remedy is to add 100 mM salt to the mobile phase. This works here too the Lys and Asp peaks collapse into the Gly peak with 100 mM salt (Eig. 8.8). High concentrations of sodium sulfate were added to determine the role played in SEC by hydrophobic interactions (sodium sulfate, a structure-forming salt, strengthens such interactions). Sodium sulfate increased the retention only of the most hydrophobic amino acids to any extent, and then only when the concentration approached 1 M. Clearly, hydrophobic interaction cannot account for the elution order of amino acids on PolyHEA. [Pg.257]

Esterification of the hydroxyl groups with a chromophore contributing acid levels the polarity effects and strengthens the detectability. The method even separates mixed bromo-chloro compounds (Fig. 7). We see the separation of the dinitrobenzoate esters of trichloropentaerythritol (6.67 min.), monobromodichloro-pentaerythritol (7.35 min.), dibromomonochloropentaerythritol (8.11 min.), 5, 4 and 1 (8.99, 10.25 and 11.71 min.), in that order. [Pg.417]

In the field, effects of chemicals upon individuals may be measured by the use of mechanistic biomarkers. This approach has recently been strengthened by new technologies arising in the field of genomics. Free-living or deployed organisms may be sampled in order to measure responses to environmental chemicals. [Pg.98]

Iron has been the dominant structural material of modem times, and despite the growth in importance of aluminum and plastics, iron still ranks first in total use. Worldwide production of steel (iron strengthened by additives) is on the order of 700 million tons per year. The most important iron ores are two oxides, hematite (Fc2 O3) and magnetite (Fc3 O4). The production of iron from its ores involves several chemical processes that take place in a blast furnace. As shown in Figure 20-22. this is an enormous chemical reactor where heating, reduction, and purification all occur together. [Pg.1467]
